American Foods That Look A Lot Different In Other Countries
When we pop into the grocery store and search for some of our favorite snacks it all feels so very normal and like it's probably like this everywhere else in the world. It probably feels like that everywhere else in the world, just with different snacks! It turns out that some of these snacks aren't so different after all...and some of them really are.
I'd Be All About That Milk Tea
I love how these Lipton iced tea containers line up to make one whole picture! That's so cute. It kind of makes you want to buy all three. I guess if I ever visit Japan, I can!
OK, This Is Kind Of Genius
You can find these Oreo sticks in Asia! It might be a little bit of a bummer to not have the satisfaction of twisting off the top, but you can use these Oreos as straws, so it kind of evens out.
Maybe Everywhere Should Do This
This can of Coke comes from Mexico and it looks mostly the same. What makes it different is that this can actually has a warning letting you know that it has a high level of ingredients that might be bad for you.
Yes To The Hot Sauce
Another great snack to come out of Mexico are these Queso Ruffles that are probably delicious. They also come with a complimentary packet of salsa because why wouldn't you want that?
Which Would You Prefer? Rockets Or Smarties?
Americans call these sugary delights Smarties, but since Canada already has their own version of Smarties (the chocolate candy rainbow), they needed something else. So, in Canada, they're called Rockets!
Does "Bubbles" Really Fit?
This cereal box comes from New Zealand, where they're called Rice Bubbles instead of Rice Krispies. Is it just me, or do the little elves look kind of different, too?
Something About This Isn't Right
The Netherlands wanted to appeal to their citizens that are curious about American culture, and what better way to do that than to offer them hot dogs in a can? Do you think they're pickled?
That's What All My Friends Call Me
So, the name of the brand is the same, Doritos, but instead of "Cool Ranch," they're called "Cool American" in Holland. I'd be very interested to know if they still taste the same.
Would You Try These?
In Asia, Pringles are a big hit, but not in the way you might think. Pringles has branched out into the instant noodle market. Those salty noodles would be delicious in broth.
They've Got A Whole Shelf
This is another cool example of "American food" in Finland. They have a whole grocery section of it stacked with all the favorites like Pop-Tarts, Sriracha, and even Twinkies!
Diet Coke's More Polite Cousin
No one wants to put it out there that they're trying to be on a diet, so wouldn't you feel so much classier ordering a Coca Cola light instead of a Diet Coke? Those fancy Italians.
Which Side Are You On?
The box on the left is a box Kraft Dinner from Canada, and the one of the right is from the United States. Interesting that the Canadian box uses a fork and the American one uses a spoon!
That's Another Way To Put It
Apparently, in France, they don't have Sour Patch Kids, but they do have Very Bad Kids, which are exactly the same thing with a hilariously similar name. I like Very Bad Kids better.
OK, This One Isn't Food, But It's Funny
To us, these are known as the classic red Solo cups, and you probably feel a hangover coming on just looking at them. In the Netherlands, they just think of them as American cups.
Do They Think We're Obsessed With Hot Dogs?
This American-style stuffed crust pizza has hot dogs in the crust! You can buy this pizza in Germany, and apparently it's delicious and a favorite of pizza lovers over there.
Mmm, Hot Dog Juice
I hope there isn't someone out there who loves hot dog juice, because it's kind of gross. This is another German invention, although I'm not sure that it's loved as much as the hot dog pizza.
You'd Know That Yellow Bag Anywhere
It's interesting that these plain flavored chips aren't just plain everywhere, but "American Classic Flavor," and that's if they even taste the same! Maybe that means the plain chips in China are a totally different thing!
I'd Give It A Try
You can buy these Salted Egg flavored Lays in Thailand. Apparently, they have a kind of sweet and sour taste thing going on. I would have thought they'd be savory all around.
Is That Like Ketchup?
I guess ketchup isn't a thing everywhere in the world, so if you had to make the equivalent with what you've got, then tomato would be it! These come from China.
Starbursts, Is That You?
In the UK, Starbursts aren't a thing...or not exactly. The exact same candy is a thing and they're in their trademark yellow package, but they're called "Opal Fruits" instead. They are even all the same flavors!
